PROFINET

Realtime Performance for Realtime-Communication!

DACHS-PROFINET

PROFINET is a very fast Ethernet based Fieldbus with bus topology.

QNX 6.3 support for DACHS PROFINET is offered for the controller boards CP1616 (PCI) and CP1604 (PC/104+) from Siemens.
Both PROFINET I/O controllers are able to work as I/O controllers and as PROFINET I/O devices.

Our DACHS PROFINET resource manager (driver) and API implementation for QNX 6.3 are fully compatible with the API defined by Siemens. The configuration of the CP16XX masters and its networks can be done by the SIMATIC NCM PC configuration tool from Siemens.

The DACHS PROFINET driver is ready to support also PROFINET IRT. The interface for the PC application is designed as an IO-Base library.  It provides all functions for C application programs to enable communications with PROFINET IO devices. The IO-Base interface provides direct access to process data when connected as PROFINET IO controller.

The CP1616 PCI and PC/104+ boards are ideally suited for connection of PC-based applications to PROFINET IO. An excellent performance is achieved by the hardware-supported preprocessing in the ERTEC 400 ASIC. The integrated 4-port real-time switch leads to a remarkable cost advantage and permits the implementation of line topologies commonly used on the field level.

DACHSview based applications and visualizations are also supporting DACHS PROFINET.

Optimizing bus performance of Ethernet based fieldbusses

Frame transmission time vs. frame size

Frame transmission time vs. frame size for Ethernet

The frame size defines the maximal frequency of the bus cycle. This is the case for Ethernet based fieldbusses like e.g. EtherCAT, PROFINET, POWERLINK a.s.o.

This fact must be noticed for the design of the size of the slave I/O images and poll sequences. Huge I/O images of the fieldbus slaves lead to low bus update cycles.
